ABOUT US

The University of Oxford advances cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in the space domain. This yields new knowledge, practical tools and business and policy-relevant solutions. We drive innovation and generate new knowledge to transform current thinking about how we understand and explore the space frontier and use space data and technologies to manage our own planet.

Within the University of Oxford, researchers are working on a wide range of different aspects of space research—ranging from launch vehicles and satellite instruments to biochemical processes in microgravity and advanced processing of satellite imagery.  Space @ Oxford builds upon the University’s existing and emerging space research excellence and was founded to improve visibility of these diverse strands of research, both within the university and externally.

Space @ Oxford is a cross-divisional research community, harnessing the University of Oxford’s diverse strengths to address the complexity involved in the space domain.Space@ Oxford aims to develop a research agenda to address key challenges within space, deepen knowledge to inform policy and planning; and develop instruments in partnership with government, research and business communities.

Connecting people across disciplines and forging partnerships

Addressing the complex challenges of space requires bringing together insights and expertise from across the physical sciences, engineering and social sciences.  The University of Oxford has a diverse portfolio of outstanding space-domain research spanning a vast array different departments and groups, including Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Geography and the SAID Business School.  Europe’s leading space cluster with over 100 companies and government organisations is just down the road at Harwell and new partnerships have emerged in the last couple of years with the European Space Agency and a number of companies.  Space @ Oxford primarily addresses internal joined-up united thinking, through an externally-facing website, a set of regular events and making sure our relationships with our partners are front and centre to what we do.  The University of Oxford collaborates globally across government, industry and with other academic institutions. This global network strengthens the evidence base to inform decision-making.

The University of Oxford invests in strategic partnerships across science, policy and enterprise communities to advance a common agenda for space exploration and understanding.  Some of our current partners include: the European Space Agency, the Satellite Applications Catapult , UK government’s RAL Space and FDL Europe.
