INTRODUCTION

Gonzalo J. Linares Matás is a DPhil student at the School of Archaeology. His doctoral project employs remote sensing and high-resolution satellite imagery to explore how prehistoric societies dealt with the opportunities and constraints of climate change and cultural interactions in the southern Sahara, by tracking changes in the morphology and distribution of settlements and funerary monuments in the arid landscapes of the southern Mauritanian highlands.

He also has extensive satellite survey experience exploring the extant archaeological record of other areas of the Sahara, with a particular interest on the Tassili’n’Ajjer (southeastern Algeria), the Ennedi highlands (northeastern Chad) and North Darfur (Sudan).
